A set of ruins in Florida, Addison Blockhouse Historic State Park is filed here for what the record attaches to it. Protected historic blockhouse ruins. The archive files it under ruins and dark history. Addison Blockhouse Historic State Park’s file is thin — a name, a place, and the reason it was filed. The short entry above is the whole of it for now. Access is restricted, and the file says so plainly. The Addison Blockhouse is the kitchen that became a fort — John Addison's Carrickfergus plantation on the Tomoka, the cotton and the sixty-three enslaved workers, then the McCraes' steam sugar mill in 1832. When King Philip and Wildcat came in March 1836, they burned the mill and killed three soldiers; the troops had already walled Addison's coquina kitchen into a blockhouse — eleven by fifteen feet, the fireplace the size of the room, the tower with the loopholes. The fort lasted a month — Fort Duncan McRee to the militia who built it around the kitchen ruins — and the plantation never came back. Addison's grave disappeared into the woods until 1911; the headstone they found is at Tomoka now. The little coquina building in the hammock is the smallest monument to the Second Seminole War — a plantation kitchen that held a garrison. The file keeps the blockhouse: Carrickfergus, the 1832 sugar mill, the 1836 raid, and the kitchen that became a fort. Addison Blockhouse is the archive's kitchen-fort file — the coquina ruin that held off the Seminoles for a month. WHY THIS FILE MATTERS Addison Blockhouse is the archive's kitchen-fort file — the plantation ruin the militia fortified. A ruin keeps its loopholes — the file's suggestion being that the blockhouse's hold is the improvisation: the kitchen that became the fort, the month it held, and the sugar mill the Seminoles burned on the Tomoka.
