The members called themselves the African Methodist Society; the congregation that grew from it is the oldest Black church in the Portsmouth record, and it has been worshipping continuously ever since — through an insurrection panic, a suspicious fire, and a war."]},{"heading":"Watched, burned, rebuilt","paragraphs":["Nat Turner's rebellion in August 1831 changed the terms. Virginia answered the uprising with laws that put Black congregations under white supervision, and the Portsmouth society worshipped under that oversight for three decades — calling its first African American pastor, the Rev. James A. Handy, only in 1864. In September 1856 the church on Glasgow Street burned; the congregation's own history says it was 'burned by wicked hands.' The membership — most of them enslaved and free Black laborers who raised the money and did the work — built the replacement on North Street in a single year and dedicated it in November 1857."]},{"heading":"The river route","paragraphs":["Church tradition holds that the 1857 building worked as a station on the Underground Railroad — that escaping fugitives were hidden inside, and that a water duct gave them a crawl route toward the Elizabeth River, where merchant ships could carry them out. The tradition adds that no fugitive was ever caught in the church. The record can't prove the route, but the National Park Service lists the site on the Network to Freedom, and the hiding places are still pointed out on tours.","In 1871 the 99-year-old congregation joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church and renamed itself Emanuel — 'God with us.'
