In 1836 a barber named Augustus Turner opened his log cabin inside Indianapolis's Mile Square to a handful of Black Methodists who wanted a congregation of their own. They called it Indianapolis Station — a name that carried, by documented reputation, a second meaning, since the church aided fugitive slaves moving through the city. William Paul Quinn, a founder of the denomination and later a bishop, rode the circuit that kept it supplied with preachers. ASHES ON GEORGIA STREET The congregation bought land on Georgia Street in 1840 and built its first church there in 1841. It became the public spine of Black Indianapolis — hosting state conventions of Black citizens, running a school, recruiting for the U.S. Colored Troops once the war allowed it. On July 9, 1862, the Georgia Street church burned; the record and church memory hold the fire to arson by proslavery hands. Members rebuilt anyway, purchasing land on West Vermont Street in 1865 and completing the brick church that still stands by 1869 — the year Indianapolis Station formally became Bethel A.M.E. Bethel mothered AME congregations across Indiana and kept organizing long after emancipation: the local NAACP chapter and the Indiana State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs were both formed under its roof in the early 1900s. The congregation sold the deteriorating building in 2016 and moved to a new cathedral — the mother church itself is now a landmark in someone else's development plan.
