In an era when even abolition-minded churches seated Black members apart, the little congregation on the highest point in Volney was integrated from early on — Black families appear on its rolls into the 1820s, before the present Federal-style frame church went up between 1832 and 1835."]},{"heading":"All proper means","paragraphs":["The congregation's antislavery commitment was organized, not incidental. In 1839 young James Seward — born free — went to Cincinnati to teach Black children, over the explicit warnings of neighbors that Ohio put him dangerously near a slave state; he was not heard from for the better part of a year, then came home. In 1843 the church adopted a formal resolution to 'use all proper means in our power' against slavery. Deacon Gilbert and Lucy housed fugitives at their farm on Gilbert Mills Road, a few doors from Mason's place.","The file's honest line belongs to the church's own pastor: whether a single freedom seeker was ever hidden inside the church itself is unknown — visitors who ask to see the cellar are told the record doesn't prove it. What is documented is the membership. The building stands nearly original on Route 3, minus its bell, with the county landfill now two hundred feet behind it — an integrated congregation's church, kept standing while the hill around it changed."]}],"name":"Bristol Hill Church","aliases":[],"type":"HISTORIC_SITE","type_label":"Historic Site","cats":["DARK_HISTORY","UNDERGROUND_RAILROAD_HISTORY","AFRICAN_AMERICAN_HISTORY","HISTORIC_SITE","RELIGIOUS","UNDERGROUND_RAILROAD"],"groups":["dark-history","historic-sites"],"desc":"NPS-listed historic site associated with the Underground Railroad.","full_desc":"A historic site in Volney, New York, a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom listing, Bristol Hill Church is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
