The Reverend Dr. Francis Lister Hawks — lawyer, clergyman, historian — built the granite house on its Greenwich hilltop in 1853, overlooking Long Island Sound; locals called it Hawk's Nest. Textile merchant and Cotton Exchange member Robert Moffat Bruce bought it in 1858, and in 1908 deeded it to the town with instructions that it serve 'as a natural history, historical and art museum, for the use and benefit of the public.' The first exhibition, by the Greenwich Society of Artists of the Cos Cob colony, opened in 1912, and the Bruce Museum has been growing around the old house ever since."]},{"heading":"The lovers","paragraphs":["The legend attached to the grounds is older than the museum. In the late 1800s, the story goes, an Irish maid working in the Belle Haven mansions fell in love with a piper, and the two spent their hours near Bruce Park; before they could marry he vanished, and she returned to Ireland and died of consumption. From the early 1900s, locals reported two figures near the museum — a boy playing a flute, a girl listening — and told of a voice calling them inside to play and sing, which they always refused, saying that once they entered they could never leave. Museum staff have told reporters that sightings thinned in recent years — construction, perhaps, having scared the ghosts away.","Filed as local folklore: a real benefactor's house, and a pair of reported lovers who declined, even in death, to come inside."]}],"name":"Bruce Museum","aliases":[],"type":"MUSEUM","type_label":"Museum","cats":["HAUNTING"],"groups":["hauntings","institutions"],"desc":"Museum research record.","full_desc":"A museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, Bruce Museum is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
