It is a nearly unique artifact: a purpose-built forum for abolition, paid for by the man the work was about. William Lloyd Garrison, James and Lucretia Mott, and the rest of the movement's speaking circuit stood at its lectern."]},{"heading":"Fourteen miles from the mob","paragraphs":["Purvis had come to Byberry because Philadelphia had tried to kill him. After his 1838 'Appeal of Forty Thousand Citizens' protested Pennsylvania's disfranchisement of Black voters, mobs repeatedly targeted the family's Lombard Street house; during the street violence of the early 1840s, by the family's account, Purvis spent a night on the stairs with a rifle. In 1844 he moved his wife Harriet — daughter of the sailmaker James Forten, a founder of the interracial Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society — and their children fourteen miles north to a farm estate across Byberry Road.","The farm was the station; the hall was the argument. Purvis organized Philadelphia's Vigilance Committee, ran it as chairman in the 1850s, and late in life estimated he had helped some nine thousand people toward freedom — the figure that earned him the title 'Father of the Underground Railroad.' The hall still stands on the meeting's grounds, the debate room intact where the station across the road has gone back to field."]}],"name":"Byberry Hall","aliases":[],"type":"HISTORIC_SITE","type_label":"Historic Site","cats":["DARK_HISTORY","UNDERGROUND_RAILROAD_HISTORY","AFRICAN_AMERICAN_HISTORY","HISTORIC_SITE","UNDERGROUND_RAILROAD"],"groups":["dark-history","historic-sites"],"desc":"NPS-listed historic site associated with the Underground Railroad.","full_desc":"A historic site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom listing, Byberry Hall is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
