{"id":365,"slug":"cassville-nehawka-nebraska","story":[{"heading":null,"paragraphs":["Cassville exists in the record as one of territorial Nebraska's intended towns — platted in 1855 by the Reverend W. D. Gage on a site about three miles north of present Nehawka, in the speculative wave that followed the Kansas–Nebraska Act opening the region to settlement the year before. The 1937 Nebraska History survey of the state's ghost towns preserves what the plat was meant to become: a store operated, and the founders incorporated plans for a university. Gage and his partners were busy in the neighborhood's future — the same circle of trustees appears the following year on the plat of Mount Pleasant, another paper town nearby.","The university was never built and the town never thickened past its intentions. When the railroad eventually reached the district it chose Nehawka, and Cassville joined the long list of Cass County sites that survive only as locality records. The file carries it accordingly: a documented plat, an ambition, and a place name that outlasted every building."]}],"name":"Cassville","aliases":[],"type":"GHOST_TOWN","type_label":"Ghost Town","cats":["GHOST_TOWN"],"groups":["ghost-towns"],"desc":"Ghost town associated with documented cultural history.","full_desc":"A ghost town in Nehawka, Nebraska, founded in 1855, Cassville is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
