The cave mouth — 25 feet tall and 128 feet wide, still billed as the widest commercial cave entrance in the world — was known to the Kennamer Cove settlers since the early 1800s; during the Civil War the Kennamer family reportedly lived in it after Union soldiers burned their farmhouse. State geologist Walter Jones catalogued it as Alabama Cave Survey No. 165. Nobody saw the cathedral.","Jay Gurley did. In 1952 the Huntsville entrepreneur explored the old Bats Cave, bought the land from the Farr heirs, and renamed it after his wife looked up at the ceiling and said it looked like a cathedral. He opened it in 1954 at twenty-five cents a head, wired the lights himself, and spent twenty years showing off the improbable inventory: Goliath, a 45-foot column 243 feet around; a frozen flowstone waterfall 135 feet long; a stalagmite forest across three acres; a stalagmite 27 feet tall and three inches wide.","Gurley lost the cave to auction in 1974, and it passed through private hands until Alabama bought it in 1987 — opening finally as a state park in 2000. The file keeps both the geology and the tenancy: 8,000 years of human use at the cave mouth, one family's wartime refuge, and one man's quarter-a-look bet that the hill country would drive out to see a cathedral underground.","Cathedral Caverns is the archive's renamed file — the cave locals picnicked at for a century until Jay Gurley saw the cathedral in it, kept Goliath and the stalagmite forest lit for twenty years, and lost it to auction before the state made it a park."]},{"heading":"Why this file matters","paragraphs":["Cathedral Caverns is the archive's second-look file — a cave known for centuries whose scale nobody credited until one man renamed it, lit it, and sold tickets at a quarter.","A cave that hid in plain sight keeps its entrance — the file's suggestion being that Cathedral's hold is the 128-foot mouth: the opening everyone knew, the wartime shelter, and the cathedral that waited inside for someone to name it."]}],"name":"Cathedral Caverns","aliases":[],"type":"CAVE","type_label":"Cave","cats":["LOCAL_FOLKLORE","HAUNTED_PLACE","NATURAL_WONDER"],"groups":["hauntings","legends","nature"],"desc":"The cave with the \"Goliath\" column—45 feet of flowstone.","full_desc":"Cathedral Caverns is a cave in Woodville, Alabama.
