Mathias Splitlog — a leader among the Wyandot and Cayuga families pushed from Canada and Ohio to Kansas Territory and finally to the Seneca-Cayuga lands of Indian Territory — settled on the Cowskin near its mouth on the Grand River in 1874 and platted a self-sufficient industrial community, Cayuga Springs: sawmill, flour mill, a buggy factory, a general store, and a post office from 1884 to 1905.","In 1893, at eighty years old and newly confirmed Catholic, Splitlog began building a church of quarried native limestone. The first service held in the unfinished building was his wife Eliza's funeral in September 1894; the completed church was dedicated as St. Matthias on November 25, 1896, before some five hundred people, and its Belgian-cast bell — audible, witnesses said, twelve miles away — tolled first in Eliza's memory. Splitlog himself died five weeks later, on January 1, 1897."]},{"heading":"The village burned","paragraphs":["Historian John Wesley Morris records that the village of Cayuga burned in 1913; only the church, the priest's house, and the carriage factory remained. The church passed to Methodist hands by 1930, was listed on the National Register in 1972 — the year the broken bell's story was still being retold — and still serves as Cayuga Mission, with its cemetery just to the south.","The file's tourism source describes a settlement 'diminished after fire; its mission church remains,' which understates it: what stands is the last major work of one of Indian Territory's most remarkable entrepreneurs, holding a 1946 mural of Delaware County discovered in 1998. The rest of Splitlog's industrial vision is the ghost town — foundation, memory, and a working church."]}],"name":"Cayuga","aliases":[],"type":"GHOST_TOWN","type_label":"Ghost Town","cats":["GHOST_TOWN"],"groups":["ghost-towns"],"desc":"Ghost town in Cayuga; research record.","full_desc":"A ghost town in Cayuga, Oklahoma, Cayuga is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
