Seward stood up to defend William Freeman — a young man of African and Native descent who had murdered four members of the Van Nest family, and who had come to the killing by way of a wrongful conviction, five years at Auburn Prison, and a head injury inflicted by a guard. Seward pled insanity, the first time the M'Naghten rule was argued in an American courtroom, and did it while a mob all but camped outside.","He lost the trial, won the appeal, and buried his client anyway — Freeman died in prison before the new trial. A plaque on the courthouse now quotes the verdict of history on Seward's stand: scorned at the time, vindicated as a man of 'principle, courage and foresight.'"]},{"heading":"The town record around it","paragraphs":["The courthouse itself went up between 1833 and 1836 for about thirty thousand dollars, its dome designed to carry a statue of Justice that the Panic of 1837 never let them afford; a 1922 fire gutted the interior and dropped the dome through the building. Auburn's abolition geography pressed close on every side — Seward's own house stood down the street, and Harriet Tubman made the town her adopted home.
