A mile north of the village of Chittenango, on a still-flooded reach of the Enlarged Erie Canal, a three-bay dry dock built in 1855-56 took the ninety-six-foot cargo boats out of the water so craftsmen could build and repair them — the grain, lumber, and coal carriers that kept the artery open. The site grew into a working hamlet of its own: blacksmith shop, sawmill, canal store and warehouse, boat shop, stables.","The New York State Barge Canal ended all of it in 1917-18, when the enlarged canal was bypassed and the dock closed. The property spent fifty years as a farm and residence; the state bought the land in 1971 and demolished the remaining buildings the next year. In 1985 local enthusiasts rediscovered the buried complex, excavated the dry docks, and rebuilt the site through archaeology and volunteer labor — the only recovered historic dry dock complex on the Erie Canal. It went on the National Register in 1992."]},{"heading":"What the museum keeps","paragraphs":["The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum now interprets the working site: the reconstructed bays and gates, sunken canal boat remains, the towpath to a rebuilt aqueduct, and the social history of the people who worked the waterway — including the era's toll on its workers, among them a fatal boiler explosion the museum preserves in the record.","The file's classification is the honest one: no claims on file, but a place listed on New York's Haunted History Trail, where canal-worker folklore is part of the collection. The archive keeps Chittenango Landing as documented history with folklore attached — a drowned industry excavated back into daylight by the people who remembered it."]}],"name":"Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum","aliases":[],"type":"MUSEUM","type_label":"Museum","cats":["DARK_HISTORY","FOLKLORE_COLLECTION"],"groups":["dark-history","institutions"],"desc":"Museum research record.","full_desc":"Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is a museum in Chittenango, New York, built in 1855.
