In late April 1863, Union Colonel Abel Streight led a raiding column across northern Alabama aiming to cut the Western and Atlantic Railroad supplying Chattanooga. Confederate cavalry under Nathan Bedford Forrest dogged him the whole way. After fighting at Day's Gap on April 29, Streight's exhausted men skirmished with the pursuers here at Crooked Creek on April 30, 1863 — holding a ridge while the column pushed on toward Gadsden. Three days later, near Cedar Bluff and just short of Rome, Georgia, Forrest bluffed Streight into surrendering a larger force; Streight went to Libby Prison. When Fred Wise bought the Cullman County land, he didn't know the battle had happened on it. A Civil War relic collector, he uncovered the site's identity, preserved the ground, and opened the Crooked Creek Civil War Museum and Park — walking trails and signage across the field where the lines stood. WHAT VISITORS REPORT The accounts filed with the Southern Spirit Guide, following Dale Langella's Haunted Alabama Battlefields, are specific for a small battlefield: apparitions of soldiers of both sides moving through the woods; a bleeding Confederate reported begging for help; a Union soldier seen strolling the museum's front lawn with his rifle; and an infrared photograph taken by paranormal investigators along the ridge that purports to show a line of soldiers where the Union held. None of it rises above reported experience, and the file keeps it there. The battle underneath the lore is documented — a minor but real action of Streight's Raid — and the museum is the reason the ground survives at all.
