Fort Point, built 1853–1861, was the only Third System fortification ever built on the Pacific — three tiers of arched casemates, seven-foot walls, designed to keep the world's navies out of San Francisco Bay. To build it, the Army blasted a ninety-foot cliff down to fifteen feet, so the guns could skip cannonballs across the water into a ship's waterline.","The site had been fortified since Spain built the Castillo de San Joaquin there in 1794; in 1846, Frémont and Kit Carson stormed the old adobe fort and found it empty. The new American fort fared only slightly better at war: its commander, Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston, resigned in 1861 to join the Confederacy and died at Shiloh. The raider CSS Shenandoah was steaming for San Francisco when it learned the war had ended. Fort Point never fought.","It nearly didn't survive peace either — the original plans for the Golden Gate Bridge called for its demolition. Chief engineer Joseph Strauss instead redesigned the south approach with a graceful steel arch over the fort, preserving it. Hitchcock put it in 'Vertigo.' The 'Gibraltar of the West' still stands in the bridge's shadow, the only one of its kind on the coast."]},{"heading":"Why this file matters","paragraphs":["Fort Point is the archive's spared file — a fort too obsolete to fight and too beautiful to demolish, saved by the bridge that made it redundant.
