The dossier holds 1 reported claim and 1 legend — all telling, no verified spine yet, and the file says so plainly. Access details are unverified — research before visiting. Morgan City began as Tigre Island — surveyors named it for a cat they couldn't identify — and became Brashear when Kentucky planter Walter Brashear subdivided his sugar plantation. Incorporated in 1860, the town spent three years under Union occupation, its Star Fort anchoring operations against the Avery Island salt works and Confederate supply lines to Texas. On the night of June 22, 1863, General A. A. Mouton's Confederates landed skiffs in the town's rear and took the whole depot: roughly 1,300 prisoners, siege guns, and stores. THE DOCUMENTED RECORD After the war, steamship and railroad magnate Charles Morgan dredged the Atchafalaya Bay channel, made the town his operating base, and got it renamed for him in 1876. The trade in fur, cypress, and seafood built the commercial row that faces Berwick Bay behind a twenty-foot seawall: the Morgan City Historic District, eighty-two buildings over eight blocks dating mostly from 1880 to 1935, now on the National Register. WHAT'S FILED The Cajun Coast visitors guide's 'Ghosts of the Coast' section reports apparitions, disembodied voices, and phantom smells through the Front Street buildings, undergirded by a standing local belief: that before the city cemetery existed, yellow-fever and Civil War dead were buried under what are now downtown streets and foundations — meaning a Front Street stroll crosses unmarked graves. The burial claim is unverified as record; as explanation for a city the river keeps trying to take back, it has proved durable. A 2019 Travel Channel series, 'Ghosts of Morgan City,' only widened the file.
