Gerat and Sophia Hollenberg set up on Cottonwood Creek in 1858, where the St. Joseph branch of the Oregon-California Trail crossed, and expanded a one-room cabin into a long six-room walnut building: family quarters, a small grocery stock, an unofficial post office, a tavern, and a loft where stage and Pony Express employees bunked. Outside stood a blacksmith shop and a stable built for a hundred head — a full road ranch aimed at the emigrant trade. THE DOCUMENTED RECORD In April 1860 the Pony Express made the ranch a home station, and for the whole eighteen months the enterprise existed, riders took meals and fresh horses there; when the line went bankrupt in 1861, Hollenberg lost hundreds of dollars he was owed. Stagecoaches kept the station working afterward. Hollenberg died in 1874 and the building reverted to a farmhouse until the state bought it in 1941. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961 and run by the Kansas Historical Society, it is a rare thing in this archive: a Pony Express station still standing on its original ground.
