John Greco spent thirty years constructing a miniature Holy Land from construction debris: Bethlehem made of cinder blocks and chicken wire, Jerusalem's catacombs dug into the hillside, the Holy Temple's columns cast from rusty water pipes, a statue of Jesus rising from a concrete pillar originally designed for a Sears store.","It opened in 1958 and drew forty thousand visitors a year through the sixties and seventies — a folk-art Sacri Monte built by volunteers called the Companions of Christ, funded by Greco's legal practice and whatever materials he could beg. When he died in 1986 he willed it to an order of nuns, who let it rot. The park officially closed in 1984; by the 2000s the miniature Bethlehem was a ruin of smashed signs and headless statues, and the neon cross was the only part still lit.","In 2010 a sixteen-year-old girl named Chloe Ottman was murdered near the cross — a real death on grounds built as a pilgrimage. A new cross went up in 2013, and locals — a priest, a former mayor, a businessman — have been trying to resurrect the park ever since. The ruins are still there: a holy city made of garbage, on a hill overlooking a dying industrial valley, lit up every night."]},{"heading":"Why this file matters","paragraphs":["Holy Land is the archive's folk-art file — a theme park built as devotion that decayed into one of America's most-photographed ruins, where the debris of faith became a landmark bigger than the thing it was built to celebrate.","A park made of junk keeps its cross — the file's suggestion being that Holy Land's power was never the miniature Jerusalem, but the fact that one man spent his life building it on a hill no one could miss."]}],"name":"Holy Land USA","aliases":[],"type":"SITE","type_label":"Site","cats":["LOCAL_FOLKLORE","RELIGIOUS","LEGEND_SITE","ABANDONED"],"groups":["legends"],"desc":"The hillside Bible park—cross lit, village ruined.","full_desc":"Holy Land USA is a site in Waterbury, Connecticut.
