The Doolin-Dalton gang — Bill Doolin, Bill Dalton, 'Bitter Creek' Newcomb, 'Tulsa Jack' Blake, 'Dynamite Dick' Clifton, 'Arkansas Tom' Jones, and 'Red Buck' Weightman — treated the town as a rest stop between train robberies, and Ingalls, by the usual account, did not ask questions of paying guests.","On September 1, 1893, Marshal E.D. Nix sent a posse under Deputy Marshal John Hixon — about fourteen men with commissions riding in covered wagons dressed as homesteaders. The element of surprise died at the saloon door, reportedly when a boy pointed out one of the gang in the street. The firefight that followed ran through George Ransom's saloon and out the back."]},{"heading":"The deadliest day in the marshals' history","paragraphs":["The tally was ugly on both sides. Deputies Dick Speed, Tom Hueston, and Lafe Shadley died; a bystander, Frank Briggs, was killed by a parting shot as the gang fired from a ridge on its way southeast. 'Arkansas Tom' was dynamited out of cover and captured; the rest escaped. The U.S. Marshals Service still counts Ingalls among the deadliest confrontations in its history.","The town never recovered a purpose. Farming and a little oil carried it a while, but when the rail and road maps went elsewhere, Ingalls went with them — a few dozen homes, a marker, and a gunfight. The file keeps the distinction clean: this is documented violence and documented decline, with no paranormal claim attached."]}],"name":"Ingalls","aliases":[],"type":"GHOST_TOWN","type_label":"Ghost Town","cats":["GHOST_TOWN"],"groups":["ghost-towns"],"desc":"Ghost town in Ingalls; research record.","full_desc":"A ghost town in Ingalls, Oklahoma, Ingalls is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
