That water made the spot a stop on the San Antonio–San Diego mail route in the 1850s, and in 1882 the railroad drilled a well and built a depot with cattle-loading pens. A post office opened in 1907 and took the name of the Mexican wolves — lobos — that once ranged the flats."]},{"heading":"Documented history","paragraphs":["A 1909 townsite promotion advertised artesian wells and a grand hotel; the buyers who arrived found neither and sued, forcing the promoters to drill the wells and build the hotel they had promised. Lobo vied unsuccessfully with Van Horn for the Culberson County seat in 1911, then lost that hotel to an earthquake in 1929. The post office closed in 1942, though the Texas Mica Company and a pair of railroad houses briefly lifted the headcount afterward.","Large-scale irrigation after World War II turned the Lobo flats green — cotton, sorghum, alfalfa — and Anderson, Clayton and Company built a gin in town. When the water table dropped sharply in the mid-1960s, pumping costs outran the crop and the gin shut down; the railroad stop had already closed in 1962. Rancher Bill Crist bought the town in the mid-1970s, the last residents left by the early 1990s, and in 2001 a group of German buyers acquired the settlement, which has since hosted intermittent art events and film screenings against its boarded storefronts."]}],"name":"Lobo","aliases":[],"type":"GHOST_TOWN","type_label":"Ghost Town","cats":["GHOST_TOWN"],"groups":["ghost-towns"],"desc":"Ghost town in Lobo; research record.","full_desc":"A ghost town in Lobo, Texas, Lobo is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
