Loudoun is the castle a cholera scare built — Francis Key Hunt, cousin of the anthem's writer and son of one of the first millionaires west of the Appalachians, fled Lexington's 1849 epidemic and saw Alexander Jackson Davis's Gothic villa in the east and wanted one. The house Davis designed and McMurtry built in 1850-52 is one of five castellated Gothic villas of Davis's left — the crenellated towers and the hollow-brick walls and the half-tunnel under the foundations to dry the footings. The house outlasted the estate — Goodloe the ambassador held it to 1921, the Castlewood subdivision took the farm's acres and most of its four hundred fifty oaks, and the city made the remnant a park. The Lexington Art League has kept it since 1984, the castle the anthem's cousin built now full of galleries — the Gothic Revival's finest Kentucky example still standing in the neighborhood that ate its grounds. The file keeps Loudoun: the cholera flight, the Davis commission, the castle's walls, and the art league that lives in it. Loudoun is the archive's Lexington file — the castellated villa and the subdivision that took the estate. WHY THIS FILE MATTERS Loudoun is the archive's Lexington file — the 1850 Davis castle and the Art League's home. A plague-flight castle keeps its towers — the file's suggestion being that Loudoun's hold is the improbability: the Gothic villa a cholera epidemic commissioned, one of five left, with art in the rooms the millionaire's son built.
