Louis Hill — son of the Empire Builder, president of the Great Northern — picked the site on Swiftcurrent Lake himself in 1909, deep in the new national park his own lobbying had created, and his board told him it would lose money: ninety-day season, unpredictable weather, a wilderness at the end of the line. He built it anyway. Workers dynamited the stumps in September 1914 and built Montana's largest hotel through a winter of subzero cold — timber logged in the park, milled on the lakeshore, the huge roofbeams and lobby columns rigged by the railroad's own bridge crews. The main wing opened July 4, 1915.","The hotel was the showpiece of Hill's whole system — two grand hotels, nine backcountry chalets, tent camps strung along the trails so guests could ride from one to the next. Many Glacier was the heart of it: the Swiss Lounge, the Ptarmigan Dining Room over the lake, the lobby's forest of columns. The employees came from St. Paul — A.J. Binder interviewed each summer's crew on the thirteenth floor of the Great Northern building and was said to hire a few 'bad apples' on purpose, to have someone to fire.","The railroad sold out in 1961; the hotel aged into what the National Trust listed among America's most endangered places before its restoration. It is still the park's grandest building — the Swiss-chalet pile on Swiftcurrent Lake where the mountains fill every window, built by a railroad that measured the wilderness in what it could sell.","Many Glacier is the archive's showpiece file — the Great Northern's grand hotel built through the 1914 winter on Swiftcurrent Lake, center of the chalet network Louis Hill's board said would fail, still the largest and finest in the park."]},{"heading":"Why this file matters","paragraphs":["Many Glacier Hotel is the archive's railroad file — the Great Northern's showpiece built 1914-17 on Swiftcurrent Lake, hub of the chalet-and-tent-camp system that sold Glacier to America, now a National Historic Landmark.","A hotel a board called folly keeps its lake — the file's suggestion being that Many Glacier's hold is the bet: the wilderness palace built against the accountants' advice, where the mountains still fill the windows the railroad cut to frame them."]}],"name":"Many Glacier Hotel","aliases":[],"type":"HOTEL","type_label":"Hotel","cats":["LOCAL_FOLKLORE","HAUNTED_PLACE","HISTORIC_HOTEL"],"groups":["hauntings","legends","lodging"],"desc":"1915 Glacier National Park lodge with a red-ghost legend.","full_desc":"A hotel in Babb, Montana, built in 1915, Many Glacier Hotel is filed here for what the record attaches to it. 1915 Glacier National Park lodge with a red-ghost legend.
