McKendree Miner's Hospital site is a former hospital in McKendree, West Virginia. Remains of a miners' hospital and later segregated nursing home. Opened in 1901 for miners and railway workers. After medical closure in the 1940s it served as a segregated nursing home, then closed and was dismantled. At the turn of the century the West Virginia legislature authorized three state 'miner's hospitals' for the coalfields — No. 1 at Welch in the southern field, No. 3 at Fairmont in the north, and No. 2 at McKendree, deep in the New River Gorge. McKendree Miner's Hospital opened in 1901 on land donated by coal operator Colonel Joseph Beury, offering free medical care to coal miners and railroad workers; every other patient paid $1.59 a day. DOCUMENTED HISTORY The hospital was less isolated than the gorge suggested: the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and its branch lines linked it to every camp in the district, and the railroad effectively served as the region's ambulance. Former nurse trainee Thelma Louise Cashion recalled near-full wards divided by race and sex, heavy with crush injuries, amputations, and burns, and a flood of patients during a 1933 typhoid epidemic. Mine closures and the site's remoteness ended medical service in the 1940s, but the building worked on for roughly another decade as a segregated nursing home for elderly Black men and women before closing for good. Over the following years it was slowly dismantled, its brick hauled off for reuse, until little remained above the foundation line. The Park Service now places its interpretation at the Thurmond depot, noting that the actual site sits off an unmaintained road and retains almost nothing to visit.
