MIDDLEGATE STATION Bar — Middlegate, Nevada Status: Status unknown · Access: Access unknown Dossier: https://haunthunt.com/place/middlegate-station-middlegate-nevada/ Roadside stop associated with phantom footsteps. Middlegate Station is a bar in Middlegate, Nevada. Roadside stop associated with phantom footsteps. It sits in the archive under haunted locations. The dossier holds 1 reported claim and 1 legend — all telling, no verified spine yet, and the file says so plainly. Access details are unverified — research before visiting. For HauntHunt it is exactly the kind of file the archive exists for: a real place, a real record, and a story still being told. The name is a surveyor's. In 1850 James Simpson was mapping a wagon route across the Nevada desert and read the mountain cuts as gates — Westgate, Middlegate, Eastgate. The Overland Stage & Freight Company built a station at the middle one in 1859 to water horses and feed passengers bound for the Tonopah and Ely diggings. When the Pony Express began on April 3, 1860, Middlegate served as a changing station for its entire eighteen-month run, until the Pacific telegraph made riders obsolete in October 1861. Stage and freight traffic kept it alive into the early automobile age. The building fell to salvage until Ida Ferguson bought it at auction in 1942 and opened a bar, cafe, and gas station in 1952. The 1962 highway realignment stranded the business; Russ and Fredda Stevenson bought it in 1984, rebuilt it with timber pulled from abandoned mine shafts, and ran it as the last full roadhouse on U.S. 50 — the stretch Life magazine named the Loneliest Road in America, where Middlegate is still the only settled stop between Fallon and Austin. KNOCKS AT THE MOTEL DOOR Travel Nevada's haunted-history coverage files the reports plainly: footsteps and knocking outside the motel rooms, with nobody there when the door opens. Out here the isolation does half the work — a generator-powered outpost in a bowl of dark, a hundred miles between towns, where every sound arrives unambiguous and unexplained. The file keeps it as roadside folklore attached to a genuinely documented Pony Express station — a place where the history is verifiable and the knocks are reported. FILED CLAIMS — 1 on record, reported not verified · [Documented legend] footsteps: Travel Nevada recounts footsteps and knocking outside motel rooms. Middlegate Station, a bar in Middlegate, Nevada, keeps the story on the menu alongside everything else it serves.
