{"id":320,"slug":"rochford-rochford-south-dakota","story":[{"heading":null,"paragraphs":["Rochford began the way Black Hills camps did — by accident. Three hunters stumbled onto what became the Montezuma Gold Mine in August 1876, and placer men from Lead and Central City followed, staking claims along Little Rapid Creek. M.D. Rochford, a county commissioner, built the first cabin in February 1877; a mining district organized that March; and in May 1878 he and R.B. Hughes platted the town in the gulch.","The rush came that autumn and was extraordinary while it lasted. By December 1878 the Black Hills Weekly Journal counted over a hundred houses, five mercantiles, saloons, boarding houses, two restaurants, two blacksmith shops, a two-story hotel and a theater — 'the liveliest mining camp we ever visited in the Black Hills, except Deadwood.' Lots hit $600 and the population estimates ran to a thousand."]},{"heading":"What the boom left behind","paragraphs":["The enthusiasm did not hold. By 1880 the population had fallen to roughly three hundred, and the Stand-By mine — whose forty-stamp mill had been the camp's engine — closed in 1881 and ran only intermittently into 1936. Rochford never emptied the way its neighbors did: it settled into the small inhabited remnant it remains, roughly twenty-five people among the gulches.","What survives is unusually legible. The Moonshine Gulch Saloon still operates in a building documented at least to 1910, and the Irish Gulch Dance Hall stands with it — the two survivors the file's single source records. The research notes keep the honest distinction: this is a living remnant, not a ghost town, and no haunting claim attaches to the record."]}],"name":"Rochford","aliases":[],"type":"HISTORIC_MINING_SETTLEMENT","type_label":"Historic Mining Settlement","cats":["GHOST_TOWN"],"groups":["ghost-towns"],"desc":"Historic mining settlement documented in historical or public cultural sources.","full_desc":"Rochford is a historic mining settlement in Rochford, South Dakota, founded in 1878.
