His son Sam — born on the farm in October 1842 — enlisted in the Confederate army and by 1863 was riding with Coleman's Scouts, uniformed couriers gathering intelligence behind Union lines in Middle Tennessee. Captured near Pulaski on November 20, 1863, with dispatches on his person, Davis was convicted as a spy. Offered his life for the name of his informant, he answered that he would rather die a thousand deaths than betray a friend. He was hanged on November 27, 1863, at age twenty-one.","His body came home to Smyrna and lay in state in the parlor; he is buried in the family cemetery behind the house. Tennessee bought the property in 1927, opened it as a museum in 1930, and listed it on the National Register in 1969. The 168-acre site — two historic houses, outbuildings, slave quarters, and the cemetery — operates as the Sam Davis Home museum."]},{"heading":"The museum's other season","paragraphs":["State tourism promotes the site's mansion-and-cemetery ghost tours and its Victorian Halloween programming, and the report file is conventional for a house museum of its vintage: an apparition of a young man variously attributed to Sam's brother Oscar, the sound of a woman crying in the parlor where Davis lay in state, footsteps, voices, and the usual electrical anomalies.","The archive files those as reported accounts.
