The Gatlins and Scarboroughs settled this stretch of Stewart County, ten miles northwest of Dover, in 1804 and 1805; half a century later iron made it a place — the Iron Mountain Furnace went up in 1854, a 42-foot stack built by Brian, Newell & Co., and the community took the furnace's name. An Iron Mountain post office opened in July 1856.","The furnace economics did not hold — it idled after a year, changed hands to Ledbetter & Bostick, then to the Cincinnati Copperage Company after the Civil War. What saved the settlement's name was a merchant: Hannibal 'Ham' Allentharpe arrived from Henry County just after the war, bought some six hundred acres, and opened a store. The post office was renamed Tharpe in March 1886, and a town accreted around it — mills, a cotton gin, churches, a rolling mill in 1915."]},{"heading":"Erased by a lake district","paragraphs":["The decline was Depression-paced: residents drifted to wage work, and the post office closed in 1942. The end was federal. In the 1960s the Tennessee Valley Authority bought out the country between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley for the Land Between the Lakes recreation area; Tharpe's remaining families relocated by 1970, the Methodist church held its last regular service in 1964 and its last homecoming in 1966, and the townsite reverted to managed forest.","The research notes set the file's limit: modern roads through Land Between the Lakes do not establish the community's full historic footprint.
