The Marsh Tavern opened in 1769 on Manchester's main street, and during the war it was a gathering place for the local Council of Safety — the room where Ira Allen proposed confiscating Loyalist property to fund the Green Mountain Boys. When owner William Marsh declared for the British, his tavern became the first property seized. The building passed through owners and names — Munson's New Inn, Widow Black's, Vanderlip's, the Taconic, the Orvis Hotel — collecting its fluted columns in 1839 and becoming the two-hundred-room Equinox House in 1853. Presidents and generals signed the register. The historic district around it went on the National Register in 1972. The guest the file cares about arrived in the summer of 1864: Mary Todd Lincoln, summering with her two sons. She liked it enough to plan a return the following year with the President, and a suite was prepared for the visit. April 14, 1865 ended those plans. Robert Todd Lincoln kept the family's tie to the valley anyway, building his summer estate Hildene just down the road. THE WIDOW WHO CAME BACK Folklore associates Mary Todd Lincoln with the south wing — a quickly vanishing apparition, usually glimpsed with a child. Staff accounts have a housekeeper meeting a bright figure on the third floor that scattered before her eyes, and a boy watching through the stair posts who was gone on the second look; a guest in a south-wing room reported a woman standing in the dark moments before the lights failed. The hotel keeps its own haunted roster alongside her: a woman in white on the grand staircase at dusk, perfume with no source, piano notes in an empty lobby, flickering lights and a creaking rocking chair in the suite linked to the Lincolns, pipe tobacco in the air. Equinox staff tell these stories themselves, on the record, which is what the archive files: folklore attached to a documented visit — the widow who never got to keep her reservation, checked in by tradition on the floor where her family actually slept.
