The Towers at 801 Myrtle Avenue is three houses folded into one. The core is a West Indies-style cottage built around 1790–1798 during the colonial expansion, its frame still showing peg construction and barge-board members scavenged from the river boats that served Natchez's fur-trade landing. An 1826 rebuilding wrapped the house in a Neo-Classical colonnade — square columns still standing on the side and rear porches — and an 1858 campaign, credited to architect J. Edwards Smith, gave it the Italian Villa facade and a pair of third-story corner rooms that read as towers and gave the house its name. Owners recount that the house served as Union Army headquarters after Natchez fell in 1863, sitting behind the Fort McPherson lines with soldiers camped on its grounds. Fire destroyed one tower in 1927, and the surviving twin was taken down to keep the facade symmetrical; owners Ginger and James Hyland restored both towers in 2018–19. It stands today on the National Register as the W.C. Chamberlain House. LIGHTS IN THE TOWERS The paranormal file is thin and the dossier says so: Visit Mississippi recounts reported lights and figures at the house, without named witnesses or a documented death to anchor them. What the house offers instead is one of Natchez's stranger material histories — an 18th-century cottage still embedded inside an Italianate mansion, towers lost to fire and rebuilt ninety years later — in a city where nearly every antebellum address keeps a similar claim.
