It was the wrong spot: the spit flooded, the foundation went soft, and in the winter of 1861 a storm took the tower down into the river. The lens was saved; the light went dark, and the government built the replacement at Coos Bay instead.","The second Umpqua light came thirty years later — the conical tower on the hundred-and-sixty-five-foot bluff above Winchester Bay, lit in 1894, built from the same plans as Heceta Head. The lens it carries is a first-order Fresnel cut by hand in Paris — six hundred sixteen glass panels, two tons of prisms, throwing its signature two-white-one-red flash twenty-four miles out to sea. It has not missed a night since it was lit.","The Coast Guard still runs it — one of the last manned light stations on the coast, in a duplex keeper's quarters that is now a museum. The question of whether the light is still needed has been raised; the two-ton lens that answers it has been the answer for a hundred thirty years.","Umpqua is the archive's second-chance file — the lighthouse that fell into the river on the first try and was rebuilt on the bluff that couldn't be taken, keeping the Fresnel that came from Paris to mark a mouth the first tower couldn't hold."]},{"heading":"Why this file matters","paragraphs":["Umpqua is the archive's rebuilt file — Oregon's first lighthouse, collapsed into the river in 1861, replaced on the bluff in 1894 with a first-order lens that has burned every night since, the station that learned where the sea couldn't reach.","A lighthouse that fell once keeps its second — the file's suggestion being that Umpqua's haunting is the lost first tower: the 1857 light the river took is the reason the 1894 one is on the bluff, and the lens that survived the wreck is still turning."]}],"name":"Umpqua Lighthouse","aliases":[],"type":"SITE","type_label":"Site","cats":["LOCAL_FOLKLORE","HAUNTED_PLACE","LIGHTHOUSE"],"groups":["hauntings","legends"],"desc":"The 1894 lighthouse—where the first one fell into the river.","full_desc":"A site in Winchester Bay, Oregon, Umpqua Lighthouse is filed here for what the record attaches to it.
