On April 16, 1959, inmates Jerry Myles and Lee Smart led a riot at Montana State Prison, seizing the cell house and killing Deputy Warden Ted Rothe. The National Guard stormed the prison three days later; the ringleaders died in an apparent murder-suicide in Cell 20 — the same cell tours point out to this day as the prison's most haunted room.
