How the archive works for the person holding it. For what the evidence classes mean, that's a different drawer — How evidence works.

Reading the archive

What is a dossier?
One page per place: the documented history, the legends told about it, the reported claims, the sources behind each, and an evidence class marking how much of it can be shown. Fact, legend and report are kept in separate columns.
What do the stamps on a dossier mean?
The stamp is the place type — hotel, cemetery, ghost town — and it links to every other file of that kind. The evidence badge grades documentation, not belief: a magnificent legend can be a thin dossier.
Why do some files show two versions of the same story?
Because the sources disagree. When accounts conflict, the archive keeps both side by side instead of picking one — the contested record is indexed at /contradictions/ and the hardest cases at /lab/hard-files/.

Games & rituals

What is the daily file?
/daily/ hides one dossier behind four clues that open one at a time. Everyone gets the same file on the same day — the draw is seeded by the date. Your streak lives in your browser, not on a server.
What does the oracle do?
/oracle/ deals you one dossier. The day’s file is the same for every visitor; a random draw is yours alone. Share a pull with /oracle/?file={slug}.
What is versus?
/versus/ places two dossiers side by side and asks which file is heavier — more claims, legends and filings. Pick, see the answer, keep the streak alive.
How does the quiz work?
/quiz/ asks five questions and files you as one of six haunted-place archetypes, each tied to real dossiers and a collection. Shareable via /quiz/?r={archetype}.

Your stuff

Where is my hunt list saved?
In your browser’s localStorage — the key is haunthunt.huntlist.v1. There is no account and nothing leaves your device; clearing site data clears the list.
What is the passport?
/passport/ keeps the files you’ve stamped as visited, also in localStorage. Stamp a file from its dossier page; the passport page tallies your coverage.
Is any of it synced?
No — deliberately. There is no backend, no account, no sync. The archive is a static site; your lists belong to the machine you’re standing at.

Keyboard & shortcuts

What keyboard shortcuts exist?
Press ? anywhere to open the card. The essentials: / opens the command palette, R pulls a random dossier, S saves the current file to your hunt list, and on a dossier page ← / → walk the previous and next file in the same jurisdiction.
Why do arrow keys sometimes not work?
Navigation is disabled while a text field, select or content-editable element has focus, and while the palette is open — the archive never hijacks your typing.

Sharing & citing

Can I link to a dossier?
Please do — dossier URLs are stable. /badge/ has copy-ready snippets: plain text, Markdown, a hotlinked card image, and an iframe embed at /embed/{slug}/.
Where does the RSS feed cover?
/feed.xml carries the 50 most recently amended dossiers — amendments, not just new files. /latest/ is the human-readable version.
Can machines read the archive?
Yes — every dossier also answers as JSON at /place/{slug}.json, and public/llms.txt documents the routes for agents. /developers/ lists the full surface.

The record itself

How many dossiers are there?
3,516 and counting — every one carrying at least one named source. The census is at /stats/ with the caveats written in.
How do I report an error?
The correction channel is described at /methodology/ — the archive takes amendments seriously and the Latest page is where they land.
Can I visit these places?
Only the ones marked open — /open/ lists the 2,394 public files, and every dossier says what its access status is. The rest are private, restricted or gone. Never trespass; the file stays filed either way.
