    Fort Mims

    On August 30, 1813, Red Stick Creek warriors overran Fort Mims — its gates reportedly left open — and killed several hundred settlers, militia and enslaved people sheltering inside, one of the deadliest attacks on American settlers in history. The massacre ignited the Creek War, brought Andrew Jackson to Alabama, and ended with the Creeks losing some 20 million acres.
