    Carroll A. Deering grounding site

    On January 31, 1921, the five-masted schooner Carroll A. Deering was found hard aground on Diamond Shoals — sails set, dinner on the stove, lifeboats and every man gone. The abandonment launched a federal investigation spanning multiple agencies and theories from mutiny to rum-runners to the Bermuda Triangle; the crew was never found.
