The July 14, 1881 shooting is documented; the fort also held the Navajo internment. The site's documented military history is the record the rest of the file stands on. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. Sources including 'Fort Sumner' carry the record. Documented ground is what separates this file from pure legend — this is part of it.
