Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina - 1776eventFort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island
On June 28, 1776, Col. William Moultrie's palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island absorbed a nine-hour pounding by the British fleet — cannonballs sinking harmlessly into the spongy logs — and drove the fleet off. South Carolina still celebrates Carolina Day every June 28; the palmetto went onto the state flag, and the fort's low silhouette still guards the harbor mouth.
