1942 to 1942 — what the record says happened on this date, in the order the years gave it to us.
- 1942historyPoston Relocation Center — Unit I
~18,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated at Poston from 1942 to 1945. The record dates it to 1942-05-08–1945-11-28. The site's documented history is the record the rest of the file stands on. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. The record appears in 'Poston'. Documented ground is what separates this file from pure legend — this is part of it.
Parker, Arizona - 1942eventPoston Relocation Center — Unit I
Poston opened May 8, 1942, on the Colorado River Indian Reservation — the largest camp complex at some 18,000 people, incarcerating Japanese Americans on tribal land over the tribe's own objections. Its adobe school blocks and collapsed barracks still stand in the desert; the memorial is maintained in part by the tribe that unwillingly hosted it.
