    Shis’g’i Noow

In October 1804, Tlingit defenders held the sapling fort against Russian assault before conducting a survival march to Chichagof Island. The documented date is 1804-10-01–1804-10-04. Shis’g’i Noow

In October 1804, the Kiks.adi Tlingit defended their fort Shis'gi Noow against Russian ships and Aleut allies for six days — then conducted a legendary survival march over the mountains to Chatham Strait rather than surrender. The battle ended armed Tlingit resistance in the area; the fort site is now sacred ground within Sitka National Historical Park.

  3. 1864event
    Fort Pulaski National Monument

From October 1864, Fort Pulaski held part of the 'Immortal 600' — Confederate officers deliberately placed on starvation rations and within artillery range as retaliation for Union POW conditions. The officers refused to renounce the Confederacy; the ordeal meant to break them made them martyrs instead, and it remains one of the fort's darkest chapters.

  4. 1886event
    Fort Pickens

In October 1886, Geronimo and the warriors of his band were imprisoned at Fort Pickens — excursion boats brought tourists out to see them, and the fort sold souvenir photographs. After seven months the Apache were moved to Alabama and eventually Fort Sill; Geronimo never returned to Arizona and died in 1909, a prisoner of war for 23 years.

    Hunter’s Home

During the pandemic autumn of 2021, the Oklahoma Historical Society moved Hunter's Home's annual ghost storytelling online — prerecorded films plus an October 22 after-dark tour replacing the usual candlelit crowd at the 1844 plantation house, the only surviving pre-Civil War plantation home in Oklahoma and one of the oldest buildings in the state.
