- 1942eventUSS North Carolina
On September 15, 1942, Japanese submarine I-19 fired the most devastating torpedo salvo in history — sinking the carrier Wasp, crippling a destroyer, and hitting North Carolina with a warhead that killed five crewmen and tore a hole in her side. She was back in the war within two months; the five dead are the men her ghost lore remembers.
