The Bell Witch — the entity called 'Kate' — is the cave's namesake legend: the voice that tormented the Bell family 1817-21, struck the children, quoted scripture, and allegedly poisoned John Bell. America's oldest famous haunting entity, documented only in Ingram's 1894 history — which makes her also its least verifiable.
