The phantom rider
Sources attach this name to the 1 place below. The name itself is part of the folklore record.
Local legend describes a phantom rider on the old road near the former tavern. The file calls it The phantom rider. The account is filed as Oral tradition. Black Horse Tavern, Old Mountain Road's file is thin on proof and long on persistence — the standard profile of American place-lore. Sources including 'Virginia folklore' keep the claim in circulation. A named spirit outlasts an anonymous one; the file's name is The phantom rider.
