White River Monster
Sources attach this name to the 1 place below. The name itself is part of the folklore record.
The White River Monster — 'Whitey' — is Arkansas's official cryptid: a large gray animal with a horn or bone on its head, reported since 1915 and peaking in the 1971 flap, when a deputy filed an official report. The legislature designated its stretch of river a protected refuge. The river stretch keeps its legal protection.
