Is Albion State Normal School haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Albion State Normal School is the campus the legislature closed — the teachers college founded in 1893 on Colonel Miller's donated five acres, where the town built the first hall with volunteer labor and twenty-six students started the two-year program. For half a century it trained Idaho's teachers from the far edge of the state, becoming Southern Idaho College of Education in 1947 just in time to be judged too small to keep.

The state closed it in 1951 over the town's objections and moved the mandate to Pocatello — the campus auctioned off in the seventies, the buildings emptying into a retreat center that never quite became one. The National Historic Landmark campus still stands at the west end of a town that built it — the normal school the legislature ended, with its quadrangles intact and its museum in one of the surviving halls.

The file keeps Albion: the 1893 founding, the volunteer-built campus, the 1951 closure, and the landmark the town wouldn't let go.

Albion is the archive's normal school file — the campus Idaho closed and the town that kept it anyway.

Why this file matters

Albion is the archive's normal school file — the 1893 teachers college and the closed campus.

A campus the state abandoned keeps its quadrangles — the file's suggestion being that Albion's hold is the persistence: the school that died by legislative act and the town that preserved it anyway, buildings intact on the hill where the teachers learned to teach.
