The Bald Rock Group Lodge sits in Cheaha State Park — Alabama's oldest continuously operating state park, opened to the public in 1933 on 2,799 acres straddling the Clay–Cleburne line around Cheaha Mountain, at 2,407 feet the state's highest point. Between 1933 and 1939, three Civilian Conservation Corps companies — the 465th, the 468th, and the veteran 2420th — built the park by hand: Cheaha Lake dug from the foot of the mountain, eleven stone cabins, two pavilions, Bunker Tower on the summit, and the stone lodge that served as the park's original hotel and restaurant.
The lodge still works — weddings, retreats, reunions — under the park system's care, an intact piece of New Deal rustic architecture.
