Is Betty and Barney Hill Historical Marker haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed reported experience. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

On U.S. Route 3 in Lincoln, in front of the Indian Head Resort across from the granite profile that gives the resort its name, stands New Hampshire Historical Marker No. 224 — erected by the state Division of Historical Resources in July 2011 after years of advocacy by the Hills' niece Kathleen Marden and a petition circulated by resident Mike Stevens.

The marker's text is a model of official restraint: on the night of September 19–20, 1961, Portsmouth couple Betty and Barney Hill 'experienced a close encounter with an unidentified flying object and two hours of lost time' while driving south on Route 3. They filed an official Project Blue Book report of a brightly lit, cigar-shaped craft the next day; the account became public only when the Boston Traveler broke it in 1965, and it remains — the marker says it plainly — 'the first widely-reported UFO abduction report in the United States.'

A memorial to a report

What the marker commemorates is not an event verified but an account filed: the Blue Book report, the hypnosis sessions that filled in the 'lost' hours, the book and television film that made the Hills' claimed abduction the template for every one that followed. Betty Hill's papers are in the University of New Hampshire's permanent collection.

The dossier keeps that distinction in the research notes' language — confidence refers to attribution, not paranormal reality — and files the marker under UFO history: a state acknowledging that something was reported on this roadside, and leaving it there.
