The record — long form

The Firewater Ghost is a blue light that travels. The legend attached to Biloxi Bay describes a cold, cobalt glow moving a foot or so above the water between Biloxi and Ocean Springs — reported since long before electric light existed to be mistaken for it. Local tradition explains it as a spectral sentry forever patrolling the bay, lantern in hand.

The account has a documented spine: writer A.G. Ragusin published it in 1922 on the authority of Captain Eugene Tiblier Sr., a seventy-eight-year lifelong Biloxi resident. Tiblier told Ragusin that around 1892 he and his brother Louis were rowing a skiff on Back Bay at about two in the morning when the light appeared — blue, hovering just above the surface. They stopped rowing and watched it cross the bay and vanish near Ocean Springs.

What the file separates

The same 1922 article preserved Biloxi's other old haunting — the headless figure of Deer Island, a pirate-treasure guardian of palmetto thickets — and the file is careful to keep the two traditions apart: one a terrestrial apparition on a specific island, the other a maritime light with no fixed address.

Both rank among the oldest recorded ghost stories on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and both are filed here as documented legend — a telling with a date, a source, and a named witness, which is more than most light lore can offer.

The record of claims

Cox recounts a moving blue light over Biloxi Bay, interpreted in folklore as a sentry’s lantern. Spectral sentry is the name the reports keep returning to. The reports at Biloxi Bay — Firewater Ghost Folklore Area are the site's second history — unofficial, unverified, and stubbornly retold. 'Ghost of Deer Island & the Firewater Ghost' preserves the telling; the record keeps it filed where it belongs, as lore. The lights are the rare phenomenon that appears on a schedule nobody set.
