Is Biosphere 2 haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Biosphere 2 is the sealed world — the $200 million glass enclosure in the Arizona desert where eight people lived for two years from 1991-93, the Mars colony experiment where the oxygen ran out. It was the most lauded experiment of the '90s, then the most ridiculed, then the most useful.

The experiment was the dream — John Allen's vision of a closed ecosystem that could sustain humans on Mars, Ed Bass's money, the rainforest and the ocean and the farm under three acres of glass. The oxygen dropped to 14% — the concrete was eating it; the cockroaches and the morning glories took over; the crew split into factions.

The building is still there — the University of Arizona's research facility, the rainforest still growing against the glass, the ocean that's now a climate experiment. The file keeps the bubble: the 1991 sealing, the oxygen failure, and the building that's still the largest closed system ever built.

Biosphere 2 is the archive's experiment file — the sealed world, the two-year mission, and the glass building that's still running.

Why this file matters

Biosphere 2 is the archive's experiment file — the closed ecosystem, the oxygen crisis, and the building that's still the largest sealed world.

A bubble that ran out of air keeps its glass — the file's suggestion being that Biosphere 2's hold is the seal: the eight biospherians, the concrete that ate the oxygen, and the experiment that's still teaching.

University of Arizona Biosphere 2 is an American Earth system science research facility located in Oracle, Arizona. Its mission is to serve as a center for research, outreach, teaching, and lifelong learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe. It is a 3.14-acre (1.27-hectare) structure originally built to be an artificial, materially closed ecological system, or vivarium. It remains the largest closed ecological system ever created. Constructed between 1987 and 1991, Biosphere 2 was planned to experiment with the viability of closed ecological systems to support and maintain human life in outer space as a substitute for Earth's biosphere. It was designed to explor
