Is Breaks Interstate Park haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Breaks Interstate Park is the canyon between two states — the 'Grand Canyon of the South' where the Russell Fork cut through Pine Mountain, the 1954 compact between Virginia and Kentucky that created one of only two interstate parks in America. Daniel Boone hunted the rim in 1767.

The Breaks was the crossing — the gorge that broke the mountain's wall, the hunting paths and the coal surveys and the borderland that belonged to both states. Boone's 1767-68 trip along the Russell Fork made the canyon part of the frontier's map.

The park is still there — the gorge that's the 'Grand Canyon of the South,' the interstate commission that runs it, the whitewater that rafts the canyon's Class V drops. The file keeps the Breaks: the canyon, the compact, and the border that became a park.

Breaks Interstate Park is the archive's border file — the canyon on the state line, the compact that shares it, and the gorge that's the South's Grand Canyon.

Why this file matters

Breaks Interstate Park is the archive's border file — the Russell Fork gorge, the Virginia-Kentucky compact, and the canyon that Boone knew.

A canyon that crosses a border keeps its compact — the file's suggestion being that the Breaks' hold is the gorge: the mountain's opening, the two states' park, and the river that made the boundary into the attraction.

Breaks Interstate Park, also known as "the Breaks," is a bi-state state park located partly in southeastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia in the Jefferson National Forest, at the northeastern terminus of Pine Mountain. The land is managed by an interstate compact between the states of Virginia and Kentucky. It is one of two interstate parks in the United States operated jointly under a compact rather than as two separate state park units. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Kentucky Department of Parks are still major partner organizations. Breaks Interstate Park has been called the "Grand Canyon of the South". Russell Fork river and Clinchfield Railroad (now
