Is Camp Chesterfield haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed media reported. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Camp Chesterfield is the Spiritualist camp that never closed — the 1891 tent city on the White River that grew into the Indiana Association of Spiritualists' headquarters, where séances and materializations and spirit photography drew thousands. The founder's family ran an Underground Railroad tunnel under their parlor.

The camp was the movement's middle — the 1891 grove meeting that became permanent, the mediums' cottages and the two hotels and the Art Deco cathedral. The 1925 raid arrested 14 mediums for false pretense; the charges were thrown out. A former medium's exposé called it the Psychic Mafia; the camp is still open.

The camp is still there — the 44 acres on the river, the National Register district, the oldest continually active Spiritualist camp in America. The file keeps the camp: the 1891 founding, the séance traditions, and the Spiritualist village that's still running.

Camp Chesterfield is the archive's Spiritualist file — the 1891 camp, the mediums' village, and the séances that are still held.

Why this file matters

Camp Chesterfield is the archive's Spiritualist file — the oldest running Spiritualist camp, the séance village, and the Underground Railroad connection.

A camp that was raided keeps its mediums — the file's suggestion being that Chesterfield's hold is the séance: the 1925 arrests that didn't stick, the Psychic Mafia exposé, and the camp that's still open after 130 years.

The record of claims

Media reportedHistorical Legend

The camp’s history mixes genuine practice with documented fraud. The reports at Camp Chesterfield are the site's second history — unofficial, unverified, and stubbornly retold. Coverage gave the claim its audience; proof remains another matter. 'Camp Chesterfield' carries the account. The legend does what legends do — it explains the place in a way the records can't.

Documented fraud cases complicate the camp’s claims.

Documented history

  • Founded 1891; the 1960 fraud exposure is documented. The town's past is on record — this entry belongs to the verified layer beneath its folklore. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. The record appears in 'Camp Chesterfield'. It's the sort of fact that gives the haunting reports their context.
