Is CHagui’an Memorial haunted?
No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.
The record — long form
In the last days of the Japanese occupation of Guam, as American forces pushed the Imperial army north, CHamoru men rounded up at the Manenggon concentration camp were forced to carry ammunition and supplies toward the Japanese command post in the Chagui'an valley of Yigo. On August 7, 1944, Marines of the 21st Regiment advancing on Yigo found a Japanese truck loaded with decapitated bodies; the next day more victims were found nearby, hands bound behind their backs. Forty-five CHamoru men and boys, ages fifteen to seventy-six, had been beheaded.
The National Register nomination — the site at Chalan Emsley was listed in 2016 — calls Chagui'an the largest known single act of Japanese military brutality on Guam and one of the few massacres of civilians on U.S. soil during the war. Records uncovered since suggest seven more victims may belong to the toll.
What the memorial answers
For decades families knew only that their men had been beheaded, not where; descendants have said the site identification and annual Liberation-week ceremonies brought 'a sense of closure' the graves never could. University of Guam researchers documented the site formally in 2004.
The file contains no paranormal claim — the category is memorial. What the archive records is a documented atrocity, a named place, and a number that took eighty years to fully count.
Documented history
