The record — long form

The Chicago Water Tower was built in 1869 — the limestone tower that survived the Great Fire of 1871, the building that stood while the city burned around it, becoming the symbol of Chicago's refusal to die.

The file's documented spine is the survival's totality: a tower that the fire spared, its standing being the city's proof that something had lived — the Water Tower being the phoenix myth's concrete relic.

The fire dead

The lore reports the fire's dead seen — the file's haunting being the catastrophe's residue: the people the Great Fire killed reportedly still at the building that survived it, the tower keeping the dead of the blaze it outlasted.

The fire dead are the file's signature — a survivor's ghost being the dead it survived, the tower's presence reportedly holding the victims of the fire that couldn't take it.

Why this file matters

The Water Tower is the archive's survivor file — an 1869 tower that lived through the fire, keeping the fire's dead reportedly still around it. The documented survival is the record; the lingering victims are the lore of the blaze that made Chicago.

A tower that survived the fire keeps its dead — the file's suggestion being that the Water Tower still holds the ghosts of the blaze that made it a symbol.

The Chicago Water Tower is a 182.5-foot (56 m) tall former water tower in Chicago, Illinois. Inside was a 138-foot (42 m) high standpipe, which housed a large water pump. In addition to being used for firefighting, the pressure in the pipe could be regulated to control water surges in the area. The tower became particularly well known when it survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 while adjacent buildings burned to the ground. Located at 806 Michigan Avenue, it is the centerpiece of a small park, the Jane M. Byrne Plaza. It lies along the Magnificent Mile shopping district in the city's Near North Side community area, and serves as an art gallery for the Chicago Office of Tourism. The to
