Is Clinton Correctional Facility haunted?
The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
Clinton Correctional spent 170 years as 'Little Siberia' — the maximum-security prison built in 1845 at Dannemora, in the Adirondack cold, where New York sent the men it wanted farthest from anywhere. The prison's iron and timber were worked by convict labor from the start; the walls went up around a town that exists because of the prison and nothing else.
June 5, 2015, broke the record nobody expected to break: David Sweat and Richard Matt — both convicted murderers in the Honor Block — cut through their cell walls with power tools smuggled by a tailor-shop employee, descended through the pipe chases, navigated the tunnels under the wall, and came up through a manhole on a Dannemora street. It was the first escape from the maximum-security section in over a century — the plot Showtime would later dramatize as Escape at Dannemora.
The manhunt ran 23 days and cost New York $23 million in overtime — 1,300 officers sweeping the North Country woods until a Border Patrol team killed Matt near Malone and a State Police sergeant shot and captured Sweat three miles from the Canadian line. The Inspector General's report found the escape ran on 'chronic complacency': unsearched employee bags, night counts done negligently or not at all, a tailor shop nobody supervised.
Clinton Correctional is the archive's escape file — the 1845 Adirondack fortress that held for 170 years until two murderers walked out through its own steam pipes, and the manhunt that found what complacency had built.
Why this file matters
Clinton is the archive's breached file — 'Little Siberia,' the prison built for permanent removal, breached from inside by its own laxity and the patience of two men with stolen tools.
A prison that held a century keeps its tunnels — the file's suggestion being that Clinton's hold is the route: the catwalks, the steam pipe, the manhole on a village street, and the 23 days the North Country spent hunting what got out.

Clinton Correctional Facility is a New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision maximum security state prison for men located in the Village of Dannemora, New York, United States. The prison is sometimes colloquially referred to as Dannemora (having once served as a massive insane asylum named Dannemora State Hospital for the Criminally Insane), although its name is derived from its location in Clinton County, New York. The southern perimeter wall of the prison borders New York State Route 374. Church of St. Dismas, the Good Thief, a church built by inmates, is located within the walls. The prison is sometimes referred to as New York's Little Siberia, due to the cold wi

The record of claims
Reported voices in the old hospital wing and a presence on the walls. An institution's ghosts are arithmetic: enough years, enough misery, and the reports write themselves. It circulates as local folklore — the kind communities keep rather than verify. The report is preserved in sources like 'Clinton Correctional Facility'. The pattern of small anomalies is itself the claim — none dramatic alone, persistent together.
